The Tightrope of The Liberal Woman

Being a liberal woman in today’s political climate feels like performing a circus act without a net, balancing on a high wire while juggling the weight of the world, knowing one slip means everything crashes down. On one side, we’re fighting for reproductive rights, racial justice, affordable childcare, healthcare, and a planet that isn’t literally burning. On the other, we’re raising kids who deserve to grow up in a world that values empathy over cruelty, but instead are bombarded daily with hypocrisy, corruption and leaders more obsessed with controlling women’s bodies than fixing real problems.

And through it all, we’re told to keep smiling. Keep working. Keep “adulting.” Keep showing up for jobs, PTA meetings, grocery runs, and community events while somehow not losing ourselves in the chaos. God forbid we get “too political” at the dance studio.

I’m a feminist, proudly so. But here’s what seems to break people’s brains: I’m also a feminist who deeply loves her husband. Feminism has never been about hating men, it’s about demanding equality, dignity, and choice. And my choice is this: a marriage rooted in partnership, respect and love. I can fight like hell for my independence and still choose to share my life with a man I adore. The fact that this even needs to be explained shows how warped the discourse has become.

The real struggle is the grind. There’s no manual for how to protest voter suppression and still remember the field trip permission slip. No handbook for advocating school equity while paying off your own student loans. And absolutely no roadmap for watching elected officials roll back rights and weaponize fear, then tucking your child into bed with enough hope in your voice to convince them tomorrow will be brighter.

Adulting as a liberal woman is brutal. We’re expected to carry our households, our workplaces, and our communities, often without recognition. We’re signing petitions during lunch breaks, showing up at school board meetings after work, absorbing the day’s avalanche of bad news before collapsing into bed. And when we do speak up, we’re branded “angry feminists,” as if demanding justice for our families and futures is some kind of personality flaw. Let me be clear: we’re not angry, we’re awake.

Meanwhile, conservatives are busy gaslighting the nation. They strip away rights while pretending it’s “freedom.” They scream about “family values” while doing nothing to make families’ lives easier. They weaponize fear while calling themselves patriots. And they expect women to be silent, grateful and obedient as they legislate us into the 1950s. Sorry, not happening.

Here’s the truth they don’t want to admit: liberal women are the glue holding this country together. We’re the ones keeping communities alive when policy fails. We’re the ones raising children who will grow up to question authority instead of blindly obeying it. We’re the ones turning exhaustion into action, despair into organizing, and love into resistance.

Yes, we’re tired. But don’t mistake exhaustion for surrender. Every time someone sneers at “liberals” or mocks “feminists,” I smile, because while they waste energy on cheap insults, we’re out here raising families, fighting injustice and reshaping the future.

We may be walking a tightrope, but we’re doing it while carrying the next generation on our backs. And make no mistake: we will not fall.
